Kinesiology taping

Kinesiology tape was developed in the 1970s by the Japanese chiropractor Kenzo Kase in collaboration with the company Nitto Denko. The aim was to support the healing process in sports injuries by promoting functional movements instead of immobilizing affected body regions.

Mr. Kase recognized that targeted traction on the skin can have a lasting positive effect on the fascial system. Today, kinesiology tape is used far beyond the sports sector in pain therapy and rehabilitation.

The original application techniques are based on kinesiological testing, which explains both the name of the material and the therapy. The tape is applied directly to the skin and can be used as a complementary measure for muscle and joint problems, nerve pain, and as part of fascial therapy. It is particularly helpful when applied after osteopathic-fascial treatment to prolong its effects.

In our practice, we exclusively use latex-free kinesiology tape from the original Japanese manufacturer. In our experience, other products, especially discount tapes or those from pharmacies and online retailers, do not meet the mechanical and physical properties of the original. Their effectiveness is limited, they more frequently trigger allergic reactions, and are therefore unsuitable for our use.

The tape usually stays on the skin for several days. If it gets wet, for example while showering, we recommend gently drying it with a hairdryer. If small corners come loose, they can be trimmed with nail scissors without affecting the overall effectiveness.

Scientific background

Despite the increasing popularity of kinesiology tape, there is currently no clear scientific evidence for its claimed mechanisms of action. The existing research exhibits methodological weaknesses, including small sample sizes and inconsistent results. However, a literature review in the field of manual medicine suggests a possible reduction in pain and improved muscle function, particularly in sports injuries.

Our assessments are based on years of practical experience in applying this method.
